The role of a trustee includes:
- Control of the Charity and its property and funds
- Responsibility for the overall governance and strategic direction of Children in Wales
- Developing the aims, Objectives and goals of Children in Wales in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines
- Ensuring that Children in Wales and its representatives function within the legal and regulatory framework of the sector, and in line with the organisation’s governing document, whilst continually striving for best Practice in governance
- Upholding the fiduciary duty invested in the position, undertaking such duties in a way that adds to public confidence and trust in Children in Wales
- Interviewing, appointing and monitoring the work and activities of the senior paid staff
As the board are responsible and liable for the governance and functioning of CIW, they are accountable in varying degrees to a variety of individuals, including: service users, members, funders, the Charity Commission and Companies House. Close attention must be given to the governing document to ascertain the type of organisational structure and the range of interested parties.
All current members of Children in Wales are eligible to be nominated or stand for election to the Trustee Board, and are able to vote. Members of the Trustee Board must be part of the Children in Wales Membership for their time on the board. Once elected, the term of office is 3 years, with the potential to renew once. After 2 terms, there must be a break of at least 2 years before being eligible to stand for election again.
