Welcome to Young Carers' Action Day - 16 March 2021.
Young carers are children or young people who take a significant role in caring for a family member. The family member could be suffering from physical or mental health problems, a disability or drug and alcohol problems.
Children in Wales has been carrying out work relating to young carers since 2002, when we were invited to join the Welsh Government's Carers' Strategy Advisory Group, to look at how young carers could be actively engaged in producing the Strategy.ξ Children in Wales believes that work to support young carers is vital as these young people are often hidden.ξ Young carers may not recognise that their role within the family is different to other children and young people, but they often carry significant physical and psychological burdens. If you would like to learn more about our work with young carers, please email: sean.oneill@childreninwales.org.uk As part of our ongoing commitment, we have developed online training for Careers Wales where we explore how we define Young Carers, their roles, the picture across Wales, their rights and the help and support that is available to them. A similar exercise is underway with Pembrokeshire County Council and the primary and secondary schools in that area. We are looking forward to raising the issues that Young Carers and Young Adult Carers are experiencing, in particular in light of the pandemic. Please get in touch if you would like us to develop a bespoke tailor-made training course for your service or County: training@childreninwales.org.uk
In readiness for Young Carers' Action Day, the Carers Trust has also developed many free resources to help you get involved, and they're available in English and Welsh by following this link: Young Carers Action Day 2021 resources - Carers Trust
