Young researchers at Children in Wales have unveiled their pioneering research on sustainability and the challenges young people face in leading eco-friendly lives. Their findings, compiled into a comprehensive report, were officially launched at a youth-led event on Friday 14 March that brought together professionals, researchers, and environmental organisations.

Held at Spark, the event provided a platform for young researchers to present their findings and recommendations, showcase their training as youth-led trainers, and share their experiences of being part of the project.

It also marked the launch of Children in Wales' new five-year strategy, reinforcing a long-term commitment to youth voice and engagement.

Young researchers led discussions on their research methods, the training opportunities they accessed, and their key findings. The event also featured a talk on the importance of youth voice in climate action, along with interactive workshops.

To ensure accessibility, the young people created multiple versions of their report, including a child-friendly edition printed on seeded paper—a sustainable approach that reflects their commitment to environmental responsibility.

This project is funded by UKRI and the Community Knowledge Fund, bringing together young people, professionals in the children’s workforce, environmental organisations, and researchers to drive meaningful change.

About the Research

  • Researchers engaged with young people across Wales through surveys and focus groups.
  • Key barriers to sustainable living identified by young people include parental attitudes, peer pressure, belief systems, lack of information, social media influence, and cost.
  • Despite these challenges, many young people in Wales are already taking action by recycling, walking and cycling instead of driving, using eco-friendly products, and opting for public transport.
  • The report concludes with the researchers’ recommendations for change.

What the Young Researchers Say

“I think it's so crucial that research like this is distributed and meets legislative power so we can mitigate the very prevalent impacts of the climate crisis.”Cor

“Gathering views from younger generations about pressing issues is essential to understanding how to fix major problems that will most likely affect them the most when they become adults. Reporting this information is important so that the public and even people in places of power can act upon it and help shape a world that we deserve to live in.” Harriet

"This report is important because it conveys the actual views of Welsh young people. Our mission was to listen to and share these views; by launching our report, we hope to encourage our government and organisations working with young people to take action in accordance with our recommendations." Elizabeth

This research highlights the impact of peer-led studies and the importance of youth voices in climate action. By gathering insights from young people across Wales, the researchers amplify the changes that young people believe are necessary for a more sustainable future.
