Parents Connect Wales would like to congratulate our partners, the Parent Advocacy Network (PAN), West Glamorgan on being featured on a BBC Wales programme.
The programme titled ‘Don’t Take our Kids’ celebrates the success of Neath Port Talbot (NPT) council in south Wales. Since 2012, they have halved the number of children in care and now have one of the lowest rates in Wales.
PAN West Glamorgan is one of the projects that supports families in south Wales and has contributed to this incredible success. The project is managed by Fiona Macloed who is an experienced social work practitioner. PAN hosts a Parent Cafe, facilitated by social workers, but led by parents who have all had social services involvement. It also offers peer advocacy, drop-ins, voice workshops, family fun days and training sessions.
The real success of PAN is in how it has empowered parents to share their lived experiences of the social service system to help others. Parents have grown in confidence as they build a network of support and use their voice and expertise to bring about change. This is an incredible example of how parents’ voices can be used to influence policy and promote the rights of their children.
