Motivational Interviewing

Two-day course “MI is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.” (Miller & Rollnick, 2013, p. 29). MI is both a person-centred AND directional approach. More than a ‘technique’ with associated ‘tools’ to use, and unlike a more ‘prescriptive’ approach, working motivationally is a way of being with people that enhances their own motivation for change. In child and family settings this approach can guide workers to have more productive conversations with family members which can contribute to the safety and well-being of children and the whole family. This course aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the objectives, principles, processes, and competencies associated with Motivational Interviewing. It offers opportunities to practice and hone these skills through pre-designed scenarios as well as personal materials. Participants will learn to recognise, promote, and respond to various forms of language that may indicate potential behaviour change. Additionally, the course will explore how both practitioners and clients can contribute to relational discord, previously referred to as resistance. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the application of this approach across diverse child and family interactions and will gain the confidence to implement it effectively in their professional environments.
